Why Are Half the Phone Numbers on Naukri Profiles Wrong?

Because the profile is older than the SIM. Confirm on WhatsApp or email before you spend the call that should have been a shortlist conversation.

TeamOB - SafalHires · 8 min read · Naukri & Job Boards

Half the mobiles on Naukri feel wrong because many profiles are stale, Indian numbers get recycled, candidates hide or rotate numbers, and consultants sometimes post someone else’s CV behind a gateway phone. It is not that Naukri fabricated digits. It is that a job-board profile is not a verified contact record. The operational fix is to confirm on WhatsApp or email — notice period and CTC included — before a recruiter burns a live call on a dead or borrowed number. That is the same call-waste problem we measured in how to cut recruiter call waste by 40%.

The number on the profile is a lead. Treat it as verified and you will spend the afternoon introducing yourself to a kirana owner who bought the SIM last month.

Stale profiles, not a Naukri conspiracy

People update current company when they switch jobs. They update skills when they are hunting. They do not update a mobile they have used for eight years until the day it dies. Naukri will keep showing the last saved number. Resdex search loves recently active profiles; inbound Applies include people who last touched the form when they were in college. The older the last-updated date, the higher the chance the number is theatre.

We are not citing a fake “52% invalid” study. Every Indian staffing floor already has the anecdote: not reachable, number switched off, “who is this,” or a parent who still owns the old prepaid. Count your own last 50 dials. If a large share never reach the person named on the CV, you do not have a sourcing problem. You have a contact-hygiene problem.

Recycled SIMs and numbers that now belong to someone else

Prepaid numbers in India get deactivated and reissued. The CV still says 98xxx. The person who answers has never heard of Java. That is not fraud by the original candidate. It is how the numbering plan works. A recruiter who treats every connect as “the candidate picked up” will log garbage outcomes and chase the wrong funnel diagnosis.

01
Last-updated is older than the labour market

A 2022 profile with a 2026 apply is a red flag for the mobile, not just the skills. Ask for a current number in writing before the first call.

02
The voice does not match the CV

If the person cannot confirm company, city, or notice even roughly, stop. You may have a recycled SIM or a consultant’s front desk.

03
WhatsApp profile photo and name disagree

Not proof, but a useful sniff test. A mismatch plus no email reply is enough to skip the second call.

Candidates who hide the number on purpose

Some job-seekers put a dummy or a friend’s number because they are employed and do not want 15 agencies calling during a standup. Some use Naukri’s visibility settings so only email is live. Calling anyway is how you get reported as spam and how your agency’s CLI starts landing on silent. Respect the channel they left open. Email and WhatsApp exist for a reason in this market.

Hiding the number is also a signal about intent. Someone who will not share a mobile until they trust the mandate is not a “bad” candidate. They are a passive-ish applicant. Screen salary and notice in writing first: how to screen salary and notice period before contacting.

Consultants posting someone else’s CV

A subset of wrong numbers are not wrong — they are the consultant’s. The CV is real-ish; the mobile routes to a person who will “coordinate.” You are not speaking to the engineer. You are speaking to a bench. That pattern shows up on volume IT and contract roles more than on captive GCC hunts. Ask for a video ping or a mail from the candidate’s own ID before you submit to a client. If they cannot produce that, you do not have a candidate. You have a broker.

Do not invent a percentage

Floors say “half.” That is a feeling, not a TeamOB dataset. Track reachable-on-first-attempt in your own CRM for two weeks. Manage the number you can see.

Confirm on WhatsApp or email before you burn a call

The expensive step is a live recruiter on a 12-minute call that ends in “wrong number” or “notice is 90 days, CTC is double.” TeamOB research on call waste puts 4–5 hours a day on doomed conversations; pre-qualification is how you cut that by about 40%. Wrong mobiles are one of the reasons those conversations are doomed. A two-line WhatsApp — “Are you open to X in Y city, notice and CTC band? Reply with a number we can call” — is cheaper than the call. Whether WhatsApp is a legitimate screening channel in India is a separate, longer note: can WhatsApp be used for candidate screening in India.

A desk rule that actually sticks

No first call until the person has confirmed identity on WhatsApp or email, or until the apply is less than 48 hours old and the number matches the CV header. Recycled-SIM risk is lower on fresh inbound; it is high on old Resdex views.

You think you are doing You are often doing
Sourcing Dialling a stale field
Screening Discovering the number is dead
Client delivery Burning hours that never reach a fit conversation

Fix contact first, then argue about AI matching. A 90% JD match with a dead mobile is not a shortlist. It is a missed call logged as “not interested.”

Questions recruiters ask after a dead-air afternoon

Why are so many Naukri phone numbers wrong?

Stale profiles, recycled SIMs, hidden numbers, and consultant gateways. Not a conspiracy, and not a published “half” statistic — a floor reality you should measure locally.

Should I still call the profile number first?

Not as the expensive first step. Confirm on WhatsApp or email, then call people who reply.

Is this Naukri’s fault?

Naukri stores what was last saved. Treat the mobile as a lead, not as verified contact data.

Stop spending the day on numbers that never belonged to the CV.
